For those of you looking to help the environment when driving, there are so many great electric cars to choose from. There’s classics like the Toyota Prius, ones from luxury brands like the BMW i3, and sleeker vehicles like the Tesla Model S. EV’s are all the rave right now, so most car manufacturers offer at least one vehicle that is either a hybrid or powered solely by electricity. With that being said, there are still some brands late to the game who are only just starting to develop electric vehicles. If you’re a consumer who is ok with waiting, keep reading to learn more about some of the most exciting electric vehicles not yet on the roads.
When looking into what electric vehicles we’ll be seeing in the not too distant future, an obvious place to start is with Tesla, the company leading the global plug-in electric vehicle market and who most recently sold close to 500,000 units in 2020. Tesla already has several EV’s on the road including the Model S, Model 3, and Model X. Yet, its most anticipated vehicle yet to hit the market is the Cybertruck.
It may look like a 3rd grader sketched its design due to the sharp angles, but its alleged performance would be unmatched. The top end tri-wheel AWD version is positioned to go from 0-60mph in a whopping 2.9 seconds, which is insane for a vehicle in the pickup truck market. More importantly in terms of sustainability, it will have a range of 500 miles, allowing owners of the vehicle to travel further than ever before on a full charge. It is definitely not the typical look for a truck, or any vehicle for that matter, but it will without a doubt catch the attention of people it passes by. And this might be a good thing, considering that if the Cybertruck catches on and many people swap their gas guzzlers for it, the transition to more EV’s on the road will accelerate.
One of the many new additions to the electric car market is Rivian. Founded in 2009, Rivian is based in Irvine, California and aims to produce two main all electric vehicles to start: the R1S and the R1T. The former is more of a sports utility vehicle, while the latter is a pickup truck. I am most excited about the R1T. Starting at $67,500 it will be priced in a comparable range to the typical high end fossil fuel powered pickup truck. Like the Cypertruck, one of its most enticing features is its look and design.
As seen above, it features iconic and futuristic looking vertical oval headlights paired with a light strip going across. An added bonus of driving in style with one of these is that you might not actually be doing any driving at all! It comes standard with level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, making long drives on the highway much more manageable. Just imagine driving from the construction jobsite to a nice break at the beach in one of these!
You might have noticed that the first two trucks were pickups. Well, that theme will continue as we take a look at the Ford F-150 Lightning. It was slated to hit the market in 2021 (uh, where is it!?), but when it finally does go on sale, it won’t look much different than the typical Ford F-150 we’ve all seen before. You might recall first seeing it in 2019 when it was filmed pulling a million-pound load of other F-150 trucks. If you don’t remember this iconic video, be sure to check it out here. Long story short, this truck has a ton of power thanks to the instant torque delivered by its electric motor.
Unlike the Cybertruck or Rivian R1T, this truck has a chance to convert lifelong truck drivers over to an electric vehicle since it keeps the same exact look as the typical combustion engine F-150. If the Lightning is able to match even a fraction of the sales performance of the classic F-150, which has been the best-selling vehicle in the US since 1981, watch out.
These are just 3 of some of the many new EV’s getting ready to hit the market in 2021 and beyond. I chose to focus solely on the EV pickup trucks since those are typically the biggest gas guzzlers and would benefit the most from a switch to an all-electric motor in terms of emissions. It remains to be seen how we’ll they’ll do in terms of sales, but with any luck they’ll be just another amazing green solution to help improve our planet, one mile at a time.
